WHAT IN THE SERENDIPITY..!?

A few months ago, I started taking conversations out of the algorithm and onto the street.
GROUND LEVEL began as an experiment. I wanted to create hand screen-printed posters that could exist outside social media.
Pieces that could be pasted onto walls, weathered by the elements, scribbled on, torn down or simply disappear.
Once those freshly printed paste-ups leave my hands, it’s a free-for-all!
Last weekend, I attended an exhibition organised by
Artists from around the world had spent time wandering through London, collecting urban detritus and transforming it into new artworks.
One piece in particular immediately caught my eye.
It was monochrome, graphic, and clearly words in a former life. Whatever message it had once contained had been completely torn apart and transformed into something abstract. There was just something about it...
Later, after a web of friendly conversation and a sprinkle of serendipity, somebody made the connection.
The collage had been created entirely from one of my own

The artist, Cecil Touchon, had unknowingly found the poster somewhere on the streets of East London and transformed it into a new artwork. Neither of us realised the connection initially.
Cecil was incredibly generous. He gifted me the finished collage and signed it for me.
The story doesn’t end there...
As part of his practice, Cecil digitally archives his collages before transforming them into monumental paintings.
Which means that a hand screen-printed poster I created in my studio is now on its way to becoming something else entirely.
The whole experience made me realise that collage isn’t just something I make. It’s a way of seeing.
Whether it’s clothes, objects or images, I love collecting the fragments people overlook and transforming them into something new to put back into the world.
And sometimes, if you’re curious, open minded and probably a little lucky, those fragments find their way back!
